There are four basic NLP language patterns.

These NLP Language Patterns are in the form of sensory based language – VAKOG, the Meta model, the Milton mode, and Sleight of Mouth model.

NLP Language Patterns – One

Sensory based NLP language patterns: It involves the sensory perception of the body in the forms such as visual, auditory or kinesthetic. It is basically a visual imagery, a mental picture, or any sound signal in the form of sound, speech or a part of dialog. It could also mean use of white noise. In kinesthetic form, certain senses are invoked in the body such as temperature, pressure and effect of certain emotions.

NLP Language Patterns – Two

The Meta model: Avoiding the technical jargon attached to this pattern, can be explained as  NLP language patterns that involves a pattern of questioning that goes to the root of the matter of certain things that are past experiences that have a negative effect on one’s life. By this technique the exact reasons why a particular experience is perceived as unwelcome or negative by the mind of the person, are found out, and according working on these particulars the negative effect to such memory or the mental block developed attached to that memory is tackled. These NLP language patterns, or processes, help one to overcome such mental block.

NLP Language Patterns – Three

The Milton model: It is considered as opposite to the Meta model. It involves avoiding any direct questions. Instead, indirect questioning is employed. It is observed that in certain tense state of mind, any direct question, however simple or with good intention it may be, might be perceived as threat or an order from an undesirable authority. Hence, to be more friendly and thus to be more successful at eliciting information related to the negative aspects of one’s negative experience, NLP Language Patterns are employed, as sounding more like an unobtrusive, helpful buddy one can talk freely to. There are a number of ways in which these NLP language patterns can be used such as conversation patterns, embedded questions, negative commands, etc.

NLP Language Patterns – Four

Sleight of Mouth pattern: Sleight of Mouth NLP Language Patterns can be described as techniques employed to achieve the impossible, i.e. it is a technique in which some negative trait is encountered and challenged again and again in the form of conversational arguments. This is achieved in a number of ways such as questioning the intent, reminding of consequences, or outcome, giving counter example, making the other to apply his or her argument to self, making one aware of the actual facts about any perceived notion, pointing out to other the argument is valid for something else and not the one intended, challenging the very basis of one’s argument rather than attacking the argument, setting the argument to a different scale so that the claimed implications do not hold, suggesting employing a better logic, and many more. It is based on a theory that if you could change the one thinks, it would be possible to achieve the impossible, that breaking of one’s rigidly held beliefs that have a negative effect on a person’s life or career.

NLP Language Patterns are really effective theories with much more complex reasoning attached to them. However, with such an elementary introduction to them, it would be helpful to imagine the scope and implications of these NLP Language Patterns.
